The 2023 inter-county season got underway yesterday when the University of Galway Connacht GAA Air Dome hosted a Connacht Hurling League quarter-final triple-header.

In the first competitive game of the year, a Joe Murray hat-trick eased Leitrim to a 4-23 to 1-8 victory over Mayo. Playing their first inter-county match since 2006, New York posted an impressive 3-28 to 0-16 win over Longford, while holders Roscommon were 0-31 to 2-18 victors over Sligo.

The semi-finals take place at the same venue tomorrow night when Leitrim take on Roscommon and New York face a Galway development squad.

Meanwhile, Kevin McStay's first game in charge of the Mayo footballers yielded a 1-20 to 1-9 victory over Sligo in Ballina yesterday afternoon.

Held in conjunction with Mayo GAA charity partners, Mindspace, the challenge match was a one-sided affair which the hosts dominated from the off. They led by 1-9 to 0-3 at half-time thanks to a goal from the manager's nephew, Conor McStay, and remained in control after the restart, despite Donal Conlon pulling a goal back for Sligo.
