Roscommon fended off Tyrone’s second-half comeback in Omagh this evening to advance to the All-Ireland senior football championship quarter-finals.

The 0-14 to 0-12 result marks the first ever championship win for the Rossies over the Red Hands as they now plan for a trip to Croke Park next weekend.

Having notched an impressive 3-20 against Cavan in their final group game last weekend, Davy Burke’s men hit the ground running here by opening up a 0-6 to 0-1 lead after 15 minutes at Healy Park.

Donie Smith, Conor Cox and Diarmuid Murtagh all found their range early on and Murtagh and Cox would land more points ahead of Daire Cregg’s fine score sending them in with a 0-9 to 0-3 advantage at the half.

Tyrone eventually got something going in the third quarter as the scores of Darragh Canavan and Eoin McElhone, along with a couple of Darren McCurry frees, brought them back within two.

Murtagh and McCurry exchanged points and a Michael McKernan score made it a one-point game, but the hosts couldn’t find another score in the some 10 minutes that remained as Cregg’s point with three minutes of normal time left ended up being the insurance score for the Connacht men as they showed the 2021 winners the exit door.
