Derrylaughan Kevin Barry's club notes

October 29, 2020

Derrylaughan Kevin Barry’s in line with the GAA’s Management Committee and Public Health advice have suspended all and any GAA Club activities until further notice. This Sunday 01st November marks the 100th Anniversary of the death of our Club namesake Kevin Gerard Barry (20 January 1902 – 1 November 1920). Kevin Barry was an Irish republican who was executed by the British Government during the Irish War of Independence. He was sentenced to death for his part in an attack upon a British Army supply lorry which resulted in the deaths of British soldiers. The timing of the execution, only days after the death by hunger strike of Terence MacSwiney, the republican Lord Mayor of Cork, brought public opinion to a fever-pitch. His death attracted international attention, and attempts were made by U.S. and Vatican officials to secure a reprieve. His execution and MacSwiney's death precipitated an escalation in violence as the Irish War of Independence entered its bloodiest phase, and Barry became an Irish Republican Martyr. An interesting discussion on Kevin Barry a Medical Student at UCD and ‘Just a Lad of Eighteen Summers’ can be found at this linkhttps://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/show/threecastlesburning/id/15811406 Unfortunately many of the planned events to mark the 100th Anniversary of Kevin Barry’s death have been affected by the current situation - please see Social Media however for information and links on Kevin Barry and any planned activities and events both from our Club and outside.
