Sligo's John Murphy has joined Derek Kent (Wexford) and Ger Ryan (Tipperary) in the race to become the next GAA president.
The Tubbercurry native received the backing of delegates at last night's Sligo GAA convention. Murphy, who is seeking to become the first Sligo person to hold the highest office, is a former Yeats County footballer who served as county board chairman two decades ago. He was part of the Sligo team that famously defeated Mayo after a replay in the 1975 Connacht SFC final and had a spell as a selector after that.
In addition, he served as Connacht GAA president and was elected as a representative of Congress and trustee of the GAA three years ago.
Jarlath Burns' successor will be voted on at GAA Congress in February.
