Limerick's five-time All-Ireland SHC winning captain Declan Hannon has announced his inter-county retirement.

The 32-year-old Adare clubman has decided to bring the curtain down on a 15-year career in which he became hurling's most decorated team captain. The brilliant centre back skippered Limerick to five All-Irelands - including their first in 45 years in 2018 - two Allianz Leagues, while he also won seven Munster SHC medals and three All-Stars in a stellar career.

Having battled injury in recent times, he passed on the captaincy to Cian Lynch this year and has thanked everyone who helped him achieve his dream of becoming a Limerick legend.

"It has been one of the greatest honours of my life to wear the Limerick jersey," said Hannon, who made over 60 championship appearances for the Treaty County.

"To represent my county, and share the highest of highs with people I love. Hurling has been a major part of my life since I was a child.

"It tested me, it humbled me, and it gave me moments I will carry in my heart forever.

"I want to thank my club Adare GAA and the Adare community, all the coaches and team-mates from underage up to senior level, your guidance and encouragement shaped the path ahead.

"I will never forget returning home to the village in 2018. That feeling will live with me always."
