O’Connor early favourite for Cork hurling post

Ben O’Connor is the early frontrunner to replace Pat Ryan as Cork senior hurling manager.

The Newtownshandrum native won three All-Ireland SHC medals as a player, captaining the Rebels to Liam MacCarthy Cup glory in 2004, before managing Cork to an All-Ireland U20HC title two years ago. O’Connor also led Charleville to county Premier IHC success in 2018 and coached Midleton to a Premier SHC title in 2021.

Current Cork U20 manager Noel Furlong and Sarsfields manager Johnny Crowley have also been touted for the job which was vacated by Ryan after three years on Saturday. Ryan, who won back-to-back All-Ireland U20 titles in 2020 and ’21 before delivering an Allianz League title and a Munster SHC crown as senior boss, has strongly dismissed rumours of a half-time dispute between Cork players and management in last month’s All-Ireland SHC final defeat to Tipperary.
