Kilkenny hurling star Walter Walsh has brought the curtain down on his glittering inter-county career.

The towering forward announced himself on the national stage by scoring 1-3 in a man of the match performance in the Cats’ 2012 All-Ireland SHC final replay victory over Galway. He went on to win two more All-Ireland medals in 2014 and ’15, and also won an All-Star at right half forward in 2016.

In a statement confirming the Tullogher-Rosbercon clubman’s inter-county retirement, Kilkenny GAA said: “Walter first lined out for Kilkenny as a minor during the Leinster championship in 2008 and bagged himself Leinster and All-Ireland medals in his first year on the inter-county scene.

“But who can forget the All-Ireland replay against Galway on September 30, 2012! That was the day Walter made his debut for the senior panel, took Croke Park by storm and scored 1-3 from play, picked up the Man of the Match Award as well as an All-Ireland title and endeared himself in the hearts of Kilkenny supporters everywhere.”

Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng also paid tribute to Walsh, saying: “His towering presence both on and off the field has inspired many young hurlers and his attitude, drive and leadership has been immense. Walter leaves us with many great memories and I wish him well in his retirement.”
