Ballyhale Shamrocks booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Kilkenny senior hurling championship thanks to a 4-19 to 1-19 victory over James Stephens this evening.

The relegation semi-final clash, which are de-facto championship first round games in Kilkenny, saw the 20-time champions leading their city counterparts by 2-10 to 0-13 after goals from Adrian Mullen and TJ Reid late in the opening half.

Eoin Cody would add the Shamrocks’ third major early in the restart ahead of Eoin Guilfoyle netting at the other end to make it a one-point (3-11 to 1-16) come the 41st minute.

Cian Kenny levelled the sides after that but another goal from Kilkenny talisman Reid would push the 2022/23 All-Ireland champions out to a three-point lead again, after tucking the rebound of his missed penalty, and they were able to see out what was a nine-point victory in the end.

Meanwhile, Dicksboro’s 1-24 to 1-11 win over Graigue Ballycallan earlier today means they’re into last eight where they face holders O’Loughlin Gaels, with the quarter-final in full as follows: Ballyhale Shamrocks v Thomastown; Bennettsbridge v Tullaroan; Mullinavat v Érins Own; O'Loughlin Gaels v Dicksboro
