Charlie Smyth will be first-choice kicker for the New Orleans Saints again this weekend after impressing on his NFL debut last week.

The former Down goalkeeper will feature against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday after kicking a 56-yard field goal in his first start against the Miami Dolphins. Having been elevated to the active roster the day before, he took his opportunity with both hands by registering his first points in the NFL with his first field kick attempt following his introduction in the fourth quarter at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Saints Head Coach Kellen Moore said: “Yeah, we’ll go with Charlie. He did an excellent job last week and we’re in an excellent development stage with both these guys [Smyth and Cade York].”

The Mayobridge man secured a two-year deal with the Saints after impressing during the NFL International Player Pathway combine last year, but has had to bide his time in the practice squad up until now.
