Ruairi McNamee points for Offaly as New York's Tiarnan Mathers looks on during the Tailteann Cup Preliminary Quarter Final at O'Conor Park Tullamore

Long-serving Offaly footballer Ruairí McNamee has announced his inter-county retirement.

The 29-year-old made the decision after starting just two games – against Sligo and Laois in the Allianz League – this year. One of Offaly’s most creative players of the past decade, McNamee made his senior debut in 2016 and was a mainstay of the attack up until this season when he was used mostly as an impact sub by joint-managers Mickey Harte and Declan Kelly. He featured prominently off the bench in a number of games, including against Laois and New York in the Tailteann Cup when he scored 1-1 and 1-2 respectively.

McNamee’s final appearance for the Faithful County came on June 14 when he came on in a one-point defeat to champions-elect Kildare in the Tailteann Cup quarter-final at Cedral St Conleth's Park in Newbridge.

Paying tribute, Offaly GAA said in a statement: “After nearly a decade of dedicated service in the Faithful jersey, Ruairí McNamee has called time on his inter-county career. A product of Offaly’s development squads, Ruairí proudly represented the county at every level, always displaying the hallmark qualities of a top-class footballer with exceptional skill, incredible fitness and remarkable accuracy off both feet, especially from dead balls.

“More than just a gifted baller, Ruairí set the standard for professionalism in our amateur game. He minded himself on and off the pitch and became a true role model for young footballers across the county.

“His commitment, discipline and love for the game never wavered, and his presence in the dressing room and on the field will be sorely missed.

“On behalf of Offaly GAA, we express our deepest gratitude for the years of sacrifice, loyalty and brilliance you have given in the green, white and gold.

"Ruairí, you’ve left a lasting legacy and we wish you nothing but success and happiness in the next chapter. Go raibh míle maith agat, and thank you for everything.”
