Donegal are Ulster senior football champions for the second year-in-a-row after edging Armagh in another epic after extra time at St Tiernach’s Park this evening.
Jim McGuinness’s side won out by 2-23 to 0-28 in the end to record their county’s 12th Anglo-Celt Cup success and seventh in 14 years.
Oisin Gallen was a man very much in form in the first-half as he struck four points to help the holders towards a 0-14 to 0-11 lead come half-time.
Armagh got some scores back in the latter part of the opening period and would trim their deficit down to one before Hugh McFadden pounced on a low ball and sent it to the top corner of Ethan Rafferty’s net.
The holders moved seven from there but, with the help of scores from Oisin Conaty and Stefan Campbell, the All-Ireland champions pulled it back again and a Conaty point at the death forced extra time.
Jarly Og Burns put Kieran McGeeney’s side in front for the first time with the opening score in extra time and, after the sides went in all square again at the break, Campbell put Armagh back in the ascendancy prior to Michael Lanagan setting-up Ciaran Moore for Donegal’s second goal.
Again, the sell-out crowd was in for a tense finish at St Tiernach’s Park once Rafferty nailed a two-pointer from a free beyond the arc, but there’d still be time for a winner which Niall O’Donnell grabbed for the Tir Chonaill men as they retained their provincial crown.
