Cork manager John Cleary was delighted to see his side get back to winning ways against Louth on Sunday.

The 1-23 to 0-18 victory at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh came after back-to-back defeats to Monaghan and Roscommon, and lifts the Rebels two points above both Down and Louth in the battle to avoid relegation from Division 2 of the Allianz League.

“The consequences of the result were pretty big here today,” Cleary acknowledged afterwards

“All the teams around us, everyone is scrapping and trying to get points, we are no different in that respect. We put ourselves into a bit of a battle, but thankfully today we came out fighting and got over the line.

“When we analysed the Roscommon game, and there was a lot of doom and gloom about it, the scoreline didn't justify the way we played. We had more scoring chances than Roscommon and we gave them two soft goals. We won all the stats bar the scoreboard, which of course is the most important one.

“But we realised we weren't a terribly bad team either and if we could brush up on a couple of things, which we did over the last couple of weeks, we had a chance coming in here.

“We decided to push up on Louth, which all teams are doing now, and that was the platform, particularly in respect of how we got off to such a good start and got a big lead by half-time,” the 1989 and ’90 All-Ireland SFC winner added as he now switches his focus to Cavan in the final round.
