Down relegated Westmeath from Division 2 of the Allianz Football League after edging a 1-26 to 0-28 victory at Pairc Esler this evening.

In the end, it was an Adam Crimmins point at the death that proved the difference between the sides as Conor Laverty’s side moved out of the relegation zone ahead of tomorrow afternoon’s games and sent their Leinster counterparts down in the process.

John McGeough bagged the hosts’ goal midway through the first-half, but the sides would be level come half-time (1-10 to 0-13) and it’d prove an airtight second-half in Newry.

A Luke Loughlin two-pointer saw Westmeath leading with five minutes remaining but the scores of Pat Havern and Crimmins would see the Mourne clinching two crucial points late on.

In Portlaoise, Clare kept themselves in the hunt for promotion from Division 3 thanks to a 2-22 to 1-21 win over Laois.

Laois held a 1-13 to 1-7 lead at the halfway stage and looked the more likely midway through the second-half until Peter Keane’s men put together a huge closing quarter.

Alan Sweeney’s goal ignited the visitors and the points of Aaron Griffin, Emmet McMahon, Brian McNamara, Darragh Burns and Eoin Cleary were what got them over the line towards their third win.
