GAA president Jarlath Burns has called on Stormont Communities Minister Gordon Lyons to help get Casement Park rebuilt.

The plea comes after Burns claimed the home of Antrim GAA could be built for around £260m. Plans to revamp Casement as a venue for Euro 2028 fell through last year when the UK Government said it would not bridge a funding gap to deliver the project in time.

"I think it would be very helpful if we could have a bit more action maybe from the Sports Minister Gordon Lyons in terms of the action points that we have agreed with him,” the GAA president said in an interview with UTV.

"It's unfortunate that he hasn't acted on those yet, but we are really looking forward to seeing what the British Government commits to in their June spending review.

"We would like him [Lyons] to campaign on our behalf because we know that probably the missing link here is the money that we are asking from the British Government to get Casement Park built.

"It's not a question of us asking him 'is he committed to it' - the Executive is committed to it, we are committed to it, the Irish Government is committed to it - and I suppose we are looking for a champion to put pressure on the British Government to ensure that they make up the shortfall of what it's going to take to meet the infrastructure needs of the GAA in Ulster.

"I want him to put as much pressure on Hilary Benn as he possibly can."
