Former Dublin star Paul Flynn says yesterday’s thrilling encounter between Kerry and Derry at Celtic Park was a fantastic advertisement for the new rules in Gaelic football.
After going in with a 0-13 to 2-5 advantage, the hosts let their lead slip with in the 61st minute before regaining it through a Shane McGuigan goal and the full-forward would point them back in front following Paul Geaney’s goal at the other end of the pitch.
In the end, it was back-to-back goals from Donal O’Sullivan and Geaney that sealed the dramatic 5-15 to 1-23 victory for the Kingdom and, speaking on The Sunday Game last night, Flynn said it was a brilliant game for a neutral like himself watching.
"It was fantastic for the rule enhancements, for us watching the game you could not take your eyes off it. If you look back to that [All-Ireland] quarter-final from last year, you could disengage but you could not disengage for a second in that game today,” said the six-time All-Ireland winner stated.
"It was end to end, chaotic, but fantastic for us neutrals to watch. Derry will take a lot of positives from the game. When McGuigan (Shane) kicks that last point, you're thinking they have controlled as much of the game as they possible could and they are going to get of here with a win, then you had what happened at the end."
The former Dublin forward also added that he thinks the new rules will help Jack O’Connor’s squad, as he stated: "It will reinvigorate Kerry. The philosophy of Kerry football is coming through. They were moving the ball at pace and there was space for players. You can see when they introduce the rest of the squad and get everybody up to pace that it will suit them.”
