Rob Hennelly has brought the curtain down on his 13-year Mayo senior inter-county career.
The long-serving goalkeeper retires with seven Connacht SFC and two Allianz League medals. He was also nominated twice for an All-Star in 2013 and '21, but a Celtic Cross proved elusive after he played in three All-Ireland finals against Dublin in 2013 and '16 (replay), and Tyrone in 2021. He was controversially chosen ahead of eventual All-Star David Clarke to start the 2016 replay.
Now playing his club football in the capital with Raheny after transferring from Breaffy two years ago, Hennelly made 43 league and 32 championship appearances in total, scoring 0-38 as a long-distance free-taker. His final appearance for Mayo was against Tyrone in the Allianz League last February. Hennelly's list of honours also includes two Sigerson Cups won with DCU in 2010 and '12.
“To Mayo GAA and the Mayo supporters, thank you for everything,” the 34-year-old said in a statement released through Mayo GAA.
“We’ve shared many highs and lows, and while I’d be lying if I said I have no regrets, I’m proud that we never gave up chasing the dream.”
TweetRob Hennelly has today announced his retirement from Inter County football after 13 seasons with the Mayo senior squad. Mayo GAA would like to thank Rob for his commitment over the last number of years at underage and senior level. We wish him the best in the future.
