The death has taken place of Pascal Flynn who minded the net for Dublin when they won Sam Maguire in 1963.

The St Mary’s Saggart clubman won three Leinster SFC medals as well as that Celtic Cross, in an intercounty career that spanned from 1959 to 1965.

His club paid tribute to their former star: “Pascal was born in 1937 and lived in the cottages near the Church in Saggart village. Pascal grew up playing football in his back garden and in 1948 he started to play for St. Mary’s U14 team. He played outfield but was always interested in goalkeeping.

“Several years later our then Senior Team were looking for a goalkeeper and Pascal stepped in, he often spoke about his memories of those matches, the big crowds and the two teams descending on Jacobs to analyse the game … great times.

“During one of those visit’s Dublin’s Mossy Whelan suggested that Pascal should be training with Dublin and two weeks later he was invited.

“Pascal joined Dublin as a sub Goalie in 1957 and went on to become first choice Goalie in 1959 following Patrick O’ Flaherty’s retirement. During his time as Dublin Goalkeeper he won 3 Leinster Final Medals in 1962, 1963 and 1965 and an All-Ireland medal in 1963. He commented recently on the strong friendships he built through the GAA and his years with Dublin, another GAA highlight for Pascal was bringing Sam to Saggart in 1963.

“Pascal continued to play with Marys well in to his 40’s, he played outfield … a superb footballer. If that wasn’t enough, as well as his full time job as a bookbinder and being a family man, Pascal trained and managed Teams in Marys over the years, most notably he managed the Adult Team to win the Intermediate Championship in 1976. Pascal also served as Club Chairman.

You will often hear Pascal Flynn’s name mentioned very proudly by Club Members, he leaves behind quite a legacy in our Club and in Dublin football.”
