All 72 members of the national panel of referees in both hurling and football are taking part in a 24-hour virtual run to raise funds and awareness for Pieta House.
With the Darkness into Light fundraiser cancelled due to the Coronavirus restriction, the GAA officials decided to come together to raise funds on the date the GAA championships were due to start in Ireland.
“We are doing a virtual run next Saturday (May 9) as it coincides with what should have been the start of the the GAA championships and the Darkness into Light event,” explained intercounty referee Sean Cleere.
“Our plan is to run the distance from Wexford Park to Páirc Uí Chaoimh up to Ballybofey and back to Croke Park. It works out at a distance of 11.2 km per referee.”
11.2km is also the average ditance a referee runs during an intercounty championship game and you can follow their individual progress on social media with the #RefereesRunForPietaHouse hashtag.
The goal is to raise €10,000 and already over €5,500 has been raised. You can contribute here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/RefereesChampionshipRunForPietaHouse
