Dublin hit Down for six goals at Parnell Park this evening on their way to recording a third win in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League.
The 6-32 to 0-18 victory moves the capital men up to second in the table with unbeaten Clare and Wexford set to face each other in Ennis tomorrow afternoon (1.15pm), while Down have been plunged to their fifth straight defeat with one round remaining against Antrim in Newry two weeks from today.
Heavy favourites coming into this one, Dublin made a flying start when John Hetherton netted their first goal after eight minutes and the same player would raise the green flag again in the 24th minute before Diarmiud O Dulaing fired in a third goal that moved the hosts towards a 3-15 to 0-11 half-time lead.
Paul Sheehan and Finn Turpin had sent over the majority of Down’s scores in the first-half, but they wouldn’t be able to stop the rot in the second-half as Dara Purcell and Patrick Dunleavy registered more goals for Niall Ó Ceallacháin’s side.
Hetherton and Conor Burke added points that made it 5-20 to 0-13 and, while Sheehan (2), Daithi Sands (2) and Shea Pucci pulled back points for Down, Dublin would wipe them out and then hammer in their sixth goal through Fergal Whitely for good measure.
