Wexford came through a tough battle with neighbours Carlow at Chadwicks Wexford Park this evening to chalk up their third win in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League.
Lee Chin made his first appearance of the season off the bench in the Model men’s 2-28 to 1-21 victory, sending over two points from play, while ‘Man of the Match’ Simon Roche weighed in with 0-14 for the hosts.
Ross Banville’s goal had given Keith Rossiter’s side a 1-4 to 0-4 lead in the 11th minute and, while that strike would be cancelled out quickly by Fiachra Fitzpatrick at the other end, the points of Roche, Darren Codd and Jack Redmond saw Wexford carrying in a 1-14 to 1-11 lead at the break.
Marty Kavanagh’s frees helped close the gap for Carlow after the change of ends and the visitors’ marksman nudged them 1-17 to 1-16 in front in the 49th minute.
Roche traded scores with Kavanagh and Chris Nolan after that and Chin would send over a levelling score on 55 minutes and add his second after Tomas Kinsella, Redmond and Roche (free) all raised white flags.
Pat Bennett’s men kept in the fight until the latter stages of normal time when they lost centre-back Kevin McDonald to a black card and conceded a penalty which Mark Fanning dispatched, with the scores of Roche, Kinsella and Conor Hearne making it a double-digit victory for the Slaneysiders in the end.
