Cootehill Celtic captured their fourth Cavan senior hurling championship title in five years by dethroning East Cavan Gaels this afternoon with a 0-17 to 0-13 victory at Kingspan Breffni.
Beaten on the stage by the same opposition 12 months ago, the Celts pulled away in the closing 10 minutes in this one to seal their club’s ninth ever county SHC success.
An airtight first-half saw Cootehill edging a 0-8 to 0-7 lead when the sides went in at the interval, with frees from Mark Moffett (2) and Thomas Leonard helping to send the town side in with a slight advantage.
Diarmaid Carney extended the would-be winners' lead a minute into the restart with a superb point, but four scores from Nicky Kenny (two frees) saw the Gaels hitting the front come the 42nd minute.
Moffett (free) tied things up ahead of sailing over a ‘65’ that made it 0-12 to 0-11 in Cootehill’s favour with a dozen minutes remaining, and the same player would fire over twice more to outweigh a Jack McGuinness point at the other end.
Rian Delaney’s point put three between the sides with four minutes to go, with marksman Kenny’s point from play in the 59th proving to be the holders last of the afternoon as Connor Shalvey rounded off Cootehill’s winning tally in injury-time.
