Mayo came out on top in their derby clash with Roscommon in Castlebar this afternoon to record a winning start in the 2025 Nickey Rackard Cup race.

It finished 1-21 to 1-14 at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, where the Rossies held a two-point lead at half-time and then smashed to the home side’s net via midfielder Ben McGahon to go up by five a minute into the second-half.

Shane Boland’s frees kept Mayo in touch and the scores of Jason Coyne and Eoin Delaney brought them back level (0-15 to 1-12) by the 52nd minute.

Ray Larkin’s men would hit the front and not look back after that, with Cormac Phillips crashing in their goal in the 62nd minute on the way to a seven-point victory.

Elsewhere, Sligo got up and running early in hurling championship’s third tier competition by defeating Louth on a 0-20 to 0-15 scoreline at Markievicz Park.

Andrew Kilcullen was in fine shooting form during the first-half as the Yeats men took in a 0-13 to 0-5 lead at half-time and, while Leon Fox pulled back three points in the third quarter for the visitors, Sligo with Kilcullen, Tony O’Kelly-Lynch and James Weir rounding off their tally.
