An emotional week for Cork hurling ended with their seniors earning a 1-22 to 2-16 victory against Kilkenny at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh this evening.

There was a minute’s applause before throw-in at the Cork venue in tribute to the late Ray Ryan after his sudden passing on Tuesday. The former Cork and Sarsfields hurler was the brother of current Rebels manager Pat, who stood alongside his players and backroom team as the applause rang out around the stadium where 22,193 fans were in attendance.

The game itself would see the hosts 0-6 to 0-4 in front when Diarmuid Healy marked his first start for the Leesiders in style with a goal in the 19th minute.

The Leinster champions responded with a goal straight away via Billy Ryan and hammered to the hosts net again some eight minutes later, with skipper Stephen Donnelly providing the finish for them this time as they moved towards a 2-9 to 1-10 half-time lead.

The second-half would see the Munster men upping it a gear however, as Patrick Horgan, who finished with 0-10, Healy and Tommy O’Connell struck over the points that eventually put them three to the good by the game’s business end.

Healy completed his 1-5 (from play) tally in injury-time to cement Cork’s second win of the campaign, with the Cats slipping to their second loss.
