Wexford claimed their first points of this year’s Allianz Hurling League campaign by defeating All-Ireland champions Clare on a 1-23 to 1-17 scoreline in Ennis.
Seamus Casey struck 1-3 from play for the Slaneysiders while Lee Chin contributed 0-5 in what was his first appearance of the season.
Casey’s goal came 15 minutes into the second-half to open up a four-point lead for Keith Rossiter’s side and, from there, the points of Cian Byrne, who finished with 0-9, Cathal Dunbar, Casey and Chin were enough to see out a crucial victory.
Clare couldn’t build on the dream start which saw talisman Tony Kelly hitting the net for them in the opening minute, as they went on to trail by 0-15 to 1-9 against the fired-up Model men at half-time.
The Banner men would get back within one point again after a couple of Aidan McCarthy points early in the restart, but Casey’s goal came at the perfect time for Wexford to help deal the Banner men their third straight loss in Division 1A.
