Abbeylara are Longford senior football champions for the first time since 2006 after overcoming Colmcille (2-10 to 1-7) in extra time at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park.

Abbeylara thought they’d clinched the victory in this replay final in normal time until veteran goalkeeper Noel Farrell nailed a late free to force the extra periods for Colmcille, as the scoreboard read 1-7 apiece come the full-time whistle.

Frankie Dolan’s men would turn this showdown into a shutdown in the extra periods however, hitting 1-3 without response, including a late Reece Reilly goal, to land the coveted Sean Connolly Cup.

Tinahely claimed their first Wicklow senior football championship title in 40 years after edging Baltinglass by 0-16 to 2-9 in Aughrim this afternoon.

After Chris Heaslip and John McGrath had hit their net in the opening 15 minutes, Tinahely went on to trail by 2-7 to 0-7 at the break before producing a superb second-half display to get themselves back in contention for the title.

With Baltinglass leading by a point with five minutes of normal time remaining, points from Matthew Ging (free) and Eoin Darcy saw Tinahely complete the comeback which gives them a first SFC success since 1984 and fourth in their history.

Earlier in the day, Slaughtneil triumphed to their 12th Derry senior hurling championship title in-a-row by comfortably seeing off Banagher.

It finished 0-16 to 0-4 in favour of the holders in Owenbeg, where they held a six-point advantage at the halfway stage before hitting another gear with Cormac O’Doherty (0-9) to the fore for them as team captain Mark McGuigan proudly collected the Fr Collins Cup on his club’s behalf.
