The GAA world is in mourning following the sudden death of legendary Cork dual star Teddy McCarthy at the age of 58.

Tributes have been flowing in for the Cork icon who is the only player to have won All-Ireland medals in both football and hurling in the same year which he achieved in 1990. He scored three points from midfield in Cork's All-Ireland SHC final victory over Galway before lining out at wing forward for the footballers in their All-Ireland final defeat of Meath a fortnight later.

With inter-county dual players now an endangered species, Teddy's achievements in Cork's double year are unlikely to be emulated.

A dynamic player who was one of the greatest high fielders in both codes, 'Teddy Mac' enjoyed an 11-year senior career with the Rebels. He won four All-Ireland medals in total - two in football (1989 and '90) and two in hurling (1986 and '90). In addition, he was Footballer of the Year in 1989 and won National League medals in both football (1989) and in hurling (1993).

He played his club hurling with Sarsfields, where he was the current vice-chairman, and club football with Glanmire. After his illustrious playing career ended, Teddy briefly managed the Laois hurlers and served as a Cork hurling selector.

Paying tribute to their most famous son, Glanmire GAA club said: "The saddest news has rocked our club and community in the last hour, the passing of the much loved, Teddy McCarthy

"We extend our deepest condolences Oonagh, sons Cian and Niall, daughter Sinead and family and friends.

"May he rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis."

Sarsfields Hurling Club also paid their respects: "Very, very sad day for the club as our vice-chairman and legend Teddy McCarthy has passed away."
