Galway's Joe Canning congratulates Joe Cooney after the win over Kilkenny in Nolan Park

Joe Canning says he wanted Anthony Cunningham to continue as Galway hurling manager in 2015.

Cunningham was ousted by a players’ vote in November of that year, just a couple of months after the Tribesmen had lost the All-Ireland SHC final to Kilkenny. Current Dublin manager Micheál Donoghue replaced the St Thomas’ man and went on to guide Galway to their first Liam MacCarthy Cup win in 29 years in 2017.

"With Anthony, everybody knows that the players had a vote, and there were players represented to go and talk to him as well - I was part of that," the now-retired Galway sharpshooter recalled in his episode of the popular TG4's Laochra Gael series, which returns next week.

"I felt, and three or four of the other guys felt, that we should have been looking at ourselves, and not the management.

"I actually backed Anthony to stay. Because he had done so much for us, it wasn’t the right thing to do. It just got messy after that.”
