Condensed season a factor as Sky Sports and GAA part ways

Sky Sports will show 20 live championship games in 2022

Sky Sports has ended its nine-year association with the GAA, citing the shortened inter-county season as a factor in its decision.

The controversial broadcasting deal has been running since 2014, but Sky confirmed yesterday that it had come to an end by "mutual agreement". There is already speculation that BBC will broadcast next year's All-Ireland finals under a new five-year GAA media rights deal to be announced later this week, with RTÉ and GAAGo expected to show the majority of championship games.

JD Buckley, chief of Sky Sports Ireland, said: "A factor in this decision has been the new shortened GAA season and its knock-on impact on the number of games Sky Sports wanted to broadcast.

"We came on board as official GAA broadcast partner in 2014 and since then, we have made significant investments in GAA – from grassroots initiatives and youth forums; to marketing initiatives and our sponsorship of the annual GAA Development Conference.

"During that time, our broadcast partnership also brought GAA to new and international audiences, driving growth in support."
