Wicklow facing coaching crisis

An appeal has been made for more coaches in Wicklow.

Concern has been expressed at the lack of coaches currently involved with Wicklow development squads.

Addressing a recent county board meeting in Ballinakill, Wicklow GDA Paul Garrigan issued an appeal for more bodies to get involved with the Garden County Academy (GCA).

"By the end of this, I'm hoping that delegates will go back to their clubs - and I know it's difficult, and some people might say, 'Paul, you should be talking to coaches but you guys are in your clubs day in, day out and you're always looking for coaches to help with them," he is quoted as saying in the Wicklow People.

"And ultimately, if we're going to be successful with the GCA moving forward, and you can see over the last couple of years with the minors that we are making improvements, but when you see these recommendations coming at national level we're going to have to change because we just don't have enough coaches on the ground.

"Currently, we have very few coaches. The GDAs are coaching a lot of the teams themselves so we're not getting the opportunity to upskill the coaches themselves. So coaches that are coming into the academy are basically not being upskilled because the GDAs are coaching the players."
