Andy Moran was accentuating the positives after suffering his first defeat in the Allianz Football League as Mayo manager.

Trailing by 0-5 to 0-11 at half-time after playing with a strong wind, the Westerners looked to be facing a heavy defeat against Donegal in Letterkenny. But they managed to keep the score to 0-14 to 1-19 in an improved second half display.

“I was actually quite pleased, I thought we did okay, I thought we stuck at in the second half," Moran told the assembled media.

“That could have gone way away from us in terms of the scoreline. Bar 25 minutes we played really well. It took us too long to get into the game. But look, two from three is okay.

“This is all about learning. If you told me we’d have two out of three wins after three rounds, I think everyone in Mayo would have accepted that.”

Mayo are on the road again next weekend when they face a Monaghan team who Moran was involved with last season. Joking that there would be no phone calls between himself and Monaghan boss Garbriel Bannigan this week, he added:

“I rate Monaghan very highly. When you go to Clones, you have to be ready to fight. If you’re not right to fight, you won’t be coming out of there with anything.”
