Ladies Gaelic Football Association President Trina Murray has led tributes to former LGFA President Walter Thompson, who passed away last Saturday.

Walter served as President of the LGFA from 2000-2003.

Renowned as a hugely influential character, Walter began volunteering with the LGFA having spent a lifetime in Gaelic games and with his beloved Erins Isle.

Among various and vital roles served in Gaelic games, Walter will also be fondly remembered as ‘the longest standing bingo caller in the country’ – a role he fulfilled every Thursday night at Erins Isle.

During his time with Dublin LGFA, he brought a no-nonsense approach to running the affairs of the county board and put solid foundations in place which have led to a period of unprecedented growth.

He was the founding father of the first Dublin ladies minor board and competitions in 1993, and also instrumental in setting up and building schools’ competitions.

He also established and managed the first Erins Isle Ladies Football team and he was Dublin LGFA chairperson from 1993-1996.

Paying tribute, LGFA President, Trina Murray, said: “I speak today with a heavy heart, but also with deep gratitude, as we remember former LGFA President Walter Thompson.

“Walter carved a real legacy – one defined by integrity, vision, and an unwavering belief in the power of Ladies Gaelic Football.

“Walter led at a pivotal time for the LGFA. He understood that progress required both courage and care – courage to push boundaries and care to protect the values at the heart of our game.

“Beyond titles and terms of office, Walter was, above all, a gentleman. He gave his time generously, listened closely, and always put the Association before himself. Many of the structures and standards we benefit from today were shaped by his steady hand and long-term thinking.

On behalf of the LGFA, I extend our deepest sympathies to Walter’s wife, Peggy, their children Deirdre, Wally Jnr. and Tracy, and extended family members and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
