Crossmaglen Rangers got their bid for a 48th Armagh senior football championship title up and running yesterday evening with a 1-13 to 0-11 win over hosts Granemore.
In what was a repeat of the 2022 SFC final in the Orchard County, Shane Lennon’s team made a sizzling start which included a Cian McConville goal as they led by 1-4 to 0-1 after just eight minutes.
Both sides would trade three points apiece for the rest of the first-half ahead of Aaron O’Neill sending over a two-pointer for Cross and another point from McConville had the margin at eight.
Granemore kept the heat on in the closing quarter though, sending five unanswered points from frees via Eoghan O’Neill, but they’d finish five short in the end.
Cullyhanna edged out Madden by 1-13 to 0-15 to mark a winning start to their championship campaign.
Having run up a 0-10 to 0-5 lead by the end of the first-half, the 2024 All-Ireland intermediate club champions hit the net early in the restart through defender Sean Og Irwin and looked to be well on their way.
However, Madden fought back, eventually getting level through Conor Grimley before Niall Smith shot them in front in the 53rd minute, meaning the hosts would need scores from Ross McQuillan and Kieran McCooey down the home stretch to secure the opening win.
Meanwhile, the first upset in the 2025 Gerry Fagan Cup race was sprung by Culloville as they dealt league champions Killeavy a 4-16 to 3-18 defeat in Culloville, where the hosts led by as many as nine points before holding on to win by the minimum.
