Kildare got their 2025 Tailteann Cup campaign up and running with an emphatic 0-36 to 0-11 win against Leitrim in Newbridge this evening.

Brian Flanagan’s men ran up a 0-16 to 0-7 lead by the end of the first-half stayed ruthless in the second period, with Ryan Sinkey, Mick O’Grady and Alex Beirne helping raise their tally to 0-30 by the 62nd minute.

Leitrim had their final tally registered by that stage as James McGrath, Niall O’Sullivan, Darragh Swords, Sinkey and Cian Burke (’45) sent over points for the Lilywhites down the home stretch to leave the margin at 25 come the final whistle.

In Portlaoise, Justin McNulty’s Laois side saw off Waterford by 0-28 to 1-16 for a winning start in the competition.

The O’Moore men had 11 different scorers over the 70 minutes, with ‘keeper Killian Roche and ace attacker Mark Barry both hitting four points each for them while Ciaran Walsh bagged the game’s only goal for Waterford just before half-time.

The day’s later game saw Wexford defeating Longford by 2-24 to 1-18 at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

It was Longford that edged a 1-12 to 2-8 lead at half-time after a promising start from the hosts that saw Sean Nolan and Mark Rossiter netting goals in the opening 17 minutes.

The Midlanders hit back with a goal of their own from Cathal McCabe to go on and lead at half-time, but the Model men found their rhythm in the second-half and the scores of Niall Hughes and Nolan would get them over the line towards an opening win

Earlier in the day, Offaly kept things to script with a 2-13 to 0-11 win over Wicklow in Tullamore, where Diarmuid Egan and Jack Bryant bagged the goals in the first-half, while Division 4 champions Limerick saw off London by 0-25 to 1-15 in Rathkeale.
