Laois proved too strong for Wexford in this evening’s Leinster senior football championship opener as they came away from Chadwicks Wexford Park with a 2-21 to 2-11 win.
Mark Barry (0-7) and Ronan Coffey (0-6) were the two most prominent in the O’Moore men’s attack as they booked their provincial quarter-final berth against Louth in Newbridge in eight days’ time.
It took all of three minutes for the visitors to net their first goal via Paddy O’Sullivan and, from there, they’d run up a 1-7 to 0-1 advantage by the quarter hour mark.

Mark Rossiter and Kevin O’Grady got sorely needed points for the Slaneysiders after that, but they’d be wiped out after Seamus Lacey’s point at the other end was backed up by Daniel O’Reilly’s goal.
Killian Roche’s ‘45’ and a Coffey free from two-point range helped Laois go on to hold a 2-12 to 0-6 lead at half-time, with Coffey and Barry adding to their team’s tally early in the resumption.
The margin would be at 13 points before Michael Kinsella bagged Wexford’s fist goal in the 57th minute and the hosts would raise the green flag again 10 minutes late via Sean Ryan, however it proved mere consolation as Justin McNulty’s charges progressed through to the last eight with a 10-point victory.

‘The people of Laois will always be grateful to Micko.
‘During his four years with us, he made us believe.
‘He was gold dust, he was the king, we were just so fortunate to have had him in our county.’
