Marty Kavanagh scored a last-gasp goal to earn St Mullin’s a 3-16 to 2-19 draw with Mount Leinster Rangers in a thrilling Carlow SHC final at Netwatch Cullen Park yesterday.

The county star’s injury-time major came after he had converted a free to leave St Mullin’s within striking distance. They can now look forward to another replay, having also needed one to get past Bagenalstown Gaels in the semi-final.

Holders Mount Leinster Rangers couldn’t have asked for a better start when a Ciaran Kavanagh goal straight from the throw-in helped them to a 1-4 to 0-1 lead after eight minutes. A Jack Kavanagh goal brought St Mullin’s back into it, only for Eddie Byrne to cancel it out at the other end.

But Jack Kavanagh’s second green flag left St Mullin’s just two adrift, 2-7 to 2-9, at the interval.

The televised clash continued to serve up some great hurling in the second half. Free-taker Ted Joyce kept the scoreboard ticking over for Rangers, but the challengers stayed in touch with scores from James Doyle, Conor Kehoe and Jason O’Neill.

With time running out, Chris Nolan and Joyce put Rangers four clear, but Marty Kavanagh’s late show earned St Mullin’s another bite at the cherry.
