McCusker counting on Division 2 experience

Declan McCusker of Fermanagh

Declan McCusker says Fermanagh should be aiming to win the Tailteann Cup after plying their trade in Division 2 of the Allianz League this spring.

The Erne County were relegated along with Kildare, but both were exposed to a higher level of football to the rest of the teams competing in the second-tier championship. With back-to-back victories over Wexford and Carlow, Kieran Donnelly’s men are already through to the knockout stages and long-serving defender McCusker told gaa.ie: “We've been playing in Division 2 this year, we should have been playing at a higher standard than a lot of the teams in Tailteann Cup.

“Last year, we got promoted from Division 3, but it didn't really stand to us when we got into the Tailteann Cup. We were poor. So, it is up to us this year to use that advantage of playing at a higher intensity in Division 2, to try to bring that into the Tailteann Cup.

“Hopefully, come the end of games we will have that bit of fitness and those tight games in Division 2 might stand to us.”
