Ray Dempsey has resigned as Limerick football manager after just five league games.

The former Mayo player took over in the autumn following on in the footsteps of Billy Lee, who led Limerick to promotion to Division 2 last year.

Four successive defeats came to an end with a deserved draw with Meath last Sunday but following discussion, Dempsey informed the county board of his decision last night.

Coach Mark Fitzgerald remains in place and will take over as manager for the remainder of the season.

“Limerick GAA wish to announce that the Limerick Senior Football management have stepped down with immediate effect,” said a statement.

"Limerick GAA would like to thank them for their commitment to the job and wish them well in their future.

"Mark Fitzgerald will take up the position of manager until the end of the season.

“Limerick GAA will be making no further comment.”
