Former Cavan ladies football underage player Leanne Kiernan made headlines yesterday when she scored a six-minute hat-trick for Liverpool in a 6-0 win FA Women's Championship rout of Blackburn Rovers.

The 22-year-old, who grew up on a pig farm in Killinkere, rattled the net three times between the 52nd and 58th minutes. Kiernan's Ireland team-mate and former Galway ladies football star Niamh Fahey scored Liverpool's opening goal in the first half.

Kiernan played ladies football for Cavan up to U16 level before joining Shelbourne and embarking on a soccer career. She subsequently joined West Ham before signing for Liverpool last summer. She has scored five goals in 22 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
