Ulster Council has confirmed that ‘finish on the day protocols’ will continue to apply for their club football championship semi-finals.

Two of the weekend’s games in the northern province were decided by penalty kicks, with the senior quarter-final between Fermanagh’s Derrygonnelly and Trillick of Tyrone going the way of the hosts (6-5) after extra time couldn’t separate the sides.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Ulster Council PRO Declan Woods confirmed that the method is set to “absolutely” be used, with all of the senior, intermediate and junior competitions’ finals set to go to a replay if necessary.

“This was a recommendation to try to improve the flow of fixtures. There are still a lot of games going on, Under-20 competitions going on in counties, leagues to be finished,” said Woods.

"Ordinarily, the teams still left in the Ulster Club could be holding up other teams in their domestic leagues and it is not fair. If there was a means to streamline it, I have no issue with it.

"Of course there will be a financial impact, but that's the way it is."
