Tipperary came up with the goods in the last quarter to defeat Waterford by 1-30 to 1-21 in Thurles and guarantee themselves a top three finish in the Munster senior hurling championship, as well as a place in the All-Ireland series.
Stephen Bennett’s goal in the opening minute gave Waterford the perfect start as they went out to a 1-3 to 0-1 lead before Tipp eventually levelled matters by the 16th minute.
Dessie Hutchinson steered the Deise men back in front a minute later but the points of Darragh McCarthy, Jake Morris and Andrew Ormond, along with a Jason Forde sideline, sent the home side in with a 0-16 to 1-10 half-time lead.
Tipp pushed their advantage out to six after the change of ends ahead their opponents closing the gap with the help of scores through marksman Bennett (4) and Jamie Barron.
Liam Cahill’s side responded well and sent over three consecutive free from McCarthy prior to Noel McGrath and Forde bumping the lead to five and Oisin O’Donoghue smashing to the Waterford net in the 66th minute to wrap up Tipp’s win.
