Roscommon launch new jersey and a new sponsor

November 17, 2014

Kevin Higgins displays a unique element of the new Roscommon Jersey - it features a map of the Clubs in the county on the back. It is believed to be the first time that this concept has been used.

Earlier today Roscommon GAA and Club Rossie unveiled new Jerseys and a new sponsor for the Roscommon Senior, Under 21 and Minor football teams. Our new Jersey takes inspiration from a golden age of Roscommon GAA in the 1970s and 1980s and in particular from a great son of Roscommon, Dermot Earley. The iconic photo of Dermot in his beloved Roscommon jersey inspires the stripes and it is hoped that the legacy of Dermot and these teams will inspire the current generation.

On the back of the jersey we have a unique feature; a map of Roscommon with an outline of every Club, which comes directly from the suggestion of the new sponsor Tom Hunt.Tom is a proud Roscommon man who initially emigrated to New York, spent time in Alaska and settled in San Francisco in the 1980s. He played Senior Football for Roscommon and won a Connacht Senior Championship medal in 1972 along with Dermot Earley. He subsequently developed a very successful construction business in the United States and has now committed a very significant six figure sum to Roscommon GAA in a three year partnership.

Rather than display a logo promoting his own business Tom proposed that the logo of Club Rossie, the commercial and fundraising arm of Roscommon GAA, should feature on the jersey in order to give added profile to the brand and to enhance it's income generating potential for Roscommon GAA. Tom has been very impressed with the structures and plans now in place off the field, in particular the financial and business experience of those involved, and his contribution will help to meet the vision and ambition of those on the field. He said "This is a proud day for myself and my family. I've always loved Roscommon GAA and returning home to watch the teams play. We're looking forward to supporting Roscommon over the coming the years.

"Speaking at the launch, Joe Gilligan, County Treasurer and founding member of Club Rossie said, "This is a really important day for Roscommon GAA and this level of sponsorship will play an important part in reaching our goals on the field. Our focus is on ensuring that Roscommon GAA teams have the best possible financial backing in order to compete at the highest level on the inter-county stage."Michael Fahey, Chairperson of Roscommon GAA, commented "We're delighted that Tom Hunt has come on board with Roscommon GAA. It's a great endorsement of the work we are doing and it is also a further confirmation of the professional manner that Club Rossie are going about their business. It highlights how effective their work is for Roscommon GAA and the impact the brand has had on the diaspora".

Kevin Higgins of the Roscommon Senior team said, "On behalf of the players I wish to thank Tom Hunt for his support. We are delighted to see such a commitment being made off the field and we'll work hard to reflect this on the field. We'd also like to acknowledge the work of Club Rossie and the difference that the group has made over the past 12 months".Thanking the team sponsors for the past three years, Michael Fahey said, "We are extremely grateful for the support of John and Lily Murphy not only for the past three year's sponsorship but for all they have done for Roscommon GAA in the last decade. John continues to be a very committed and proud Roscommon man and we look forward to working with him again. We would also like to sincerely thank the Under 21 and Minor sponsors, Dermot Hughes Cars and BNP Paribas Real Estate and who have been hugely supportive and we hope they will continue to be".
