Monaghan inflicted Roscommon with their first loss of this year’s Allianz Football League campaign thanks to a hard-earned 0-14 to 0-11 victory in Clones this afternoon.

Frees from Rory Beggan and Jack McCarron and a Sean Jones point proved key for Vinny Corey’s men down the home stretch as they moved away from the bottom end of the Division 1 table to join Galway and Kerry on four points.

It was the points of McCarron (free) and Michael Brannigan that saw the hosts lead 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time and Dessie Ward’s score early in the restart had them three to the good.

Ryan Wylie would stretch it out to four prior to points from Enda Smith and Niall Kilroy at the other end which kept the Rossies right in contention.

Brian Stack’s fine effort made it a three-point game with eight minutes to go and it was as close as Davy Burke’s men would get, as Beggan, McCarron and Jones all raised white flags that booked a vital win for the Farney men and handed their opponents a first defeat in 11 games.
