Gaelic games are the most popular sports in Ireland, according to the results of the Teneo Sport and Sponsorship Index 2020.

The TSSI reports that 24% of the Irish sporting public choose Gaelic games as their number one sport compared to 14% for soccer and 13% for rugby.

First conducted in 2010, the TSSI is a comprehensive 1,000 person nationally representative survey with quotas imposed across gender, region, age and social class and examines the Irish general public’s attitudes towards sport and exercise. 

It is the third consecutive year that Gaelic games occupy the top spot while Dublin’s unprecedented achievement in winning six All-Ireland SFC titles in-a-row sees them finish at the summit of the ‘Team of the Year’ poll.

Dessie Farrell’s size garnered 24% of the vote and pipped John Kiely and Limerick who came in second on 23%.

The Dublin ladies football team also featured prominently in that category, finishing in fourth place with 12%.

Tipperary’s surprise Munster SFC success featured in the ‘Greatest Sporting Achievement’ category with 8% along with Dublin’s six in-a-row (9%) and Limerick’s Liam MacCarthy Cup success (7%).
