U15 League:
Our U15s played very well in a tough game against recent U14 champions Naomh Bríd on Thursday evening but were unlucky not to come away with a win.
K/K got the quicker start with the ball being predominately in the K/K forward lines but were unlucky not to convert many scores. Cara Guinan struck a good ball into Saoirse Spain, but the ball went just wide. Wing back Ciara Nugent brilliantly chased a Naomh Bríd forward to force her wide, keeping the sides scoreless in the opening minutes of the game. Emer Bracken hit a free from the middle of the field high into full forward Cliona Mannion but the ball dropped short and was cleared by the Naomh Bríd backline. After seven minutes the Naomh Bríd forwards found their form and hit 3-01 in quick succession. The K/K backline did make the Naomh Bríd forwards have to work hard for their scores. Cleo Meehan put great pressure on her marker to ensure that her shot would be sent wide and Ava Sweeney chased down her marker to stop a goal. Down the other end of the field, Saoirse Spain hit another ball into Cliona Mannion who was unlucky to have her shot on goal blocked. K/K’s first score came from Emer Bracken who converted a free into a point. Immediately after Mikayla Commins was involved in a battle for possession for the ball. Saoirse Spain dove in to help and managed to get the ball and get K/K’s first goal of the game. Another scuffle in front of the goal ensued and Alison-rose Meacle hit the ball along the ground, but the ball flew just right of the post. Naomh Bríd scored another two goals before half time but the K/K team kept battling for scores. Just before half time, Alison-rose Meacle blocked a Naomh Bríd defender coming out with the ball and Cliona Mannion and Anna McDonald fought for a score but were foiled by the half time whistle. The half ended 1-01 to 5-01.
Naomh Bríd started the second half strong with a goal and a point. The K/K forwards quickly responded with a long ball from Saoirse Spain dropping in front of Cliona Mannion who scored her first goal of the game. Saoirse Spain was back out immediately and collected up the Naomh Bríd puck out and scored a point. Adele Nugent made a great block in the backlines to prevent a Naomh Bríd score but they were quickly on the attack again and slipped in another goal. Centre forward Saoirse Spain was covering serious ground in the middle of the field and moved the ball into Cliona Mannion and Ciara Nugent who battled hard for a score. Cliona Mannion ended up getting the final strike into the net. This was shortly followed by a strike in from midfielder Emer Bracken and Cliona Mannion doubled on it to score her third goal of the game. For the final 15 minutes of the game, Cleo Meehan was moved into the goals and made two brilliant saves one after the other with the ball then being cleared by Adele Daly Brady. After all her hard work, Saoirse Spain deservedly scored her point from play that was followed with a point from Cliona Mannion after a brilliant catch. Cliona Mannion scored her fourth goal that was quickly countered by a Naomh Bríd goal. In a great show of skill, Lily Leonard, who had dropped her hurl in a battle for the ball, managed to pick it up off the ground and rise the ball before any Naomh Bríd forwards could dispossess her. K/K played a spirited and determined game but were unable to overcome a strong Naomh Bríd side. The game ended 5-04 to 9-03.
