The Kilcormac Killoughey minor squad

Minor Championship:

Our Minor team had a tough encounter with St. Rynagh’s in Banagher on Sunday in their Minor Semi-Final.

St. Rynagh’s for sure started the stronger side, scoring three points and a goal in the first ten minutes. Saorah Doyle scored her first free before K/K created their first goal chance with a ball straight across the goal mouth. Isabella Gleeson collected up the ball and converted it into a point. Saorah Doyle scored a second free and St. Rynagh’s responded with a very threatening goal chance. Some brilliant defensive work from Elizabeth Kilmartin and Clodagh Murphy denied them the goal. The ball headed straight to the other end of the field with Isabella Gleeson’s goal chance being saved.

The St. Rynagh’s forwards continued to work hard and within a few minutes they had scored their goal, but Saorah Doyle responded with a goal of her own. St. Rynagh’s and Caoimhe Quinn scored a point each, with Isabella Gleeson adding her score shortly after. Centre back, Áine Rigney had been taking K/K’s long distance frees and she was rewarded just before the break with a point for her brilliant free taking. Saorah Doyle finished the half in style with a long solo run in towards the goals and flicking the ball over the bar, leaving the game a draw, 1-07 to 2-04, at half time.

Lucy Fitzgerald opened the second half with a point from play and Saorah Doyle followed it with a free. K/K seemed to be on top form with a long free from Áine Rigney dropping in to corner forward, Aideen Quinn, who hit the back of the net. Within a few minutes, a pass from Aideen Quinn to Orla Kilmartin to Isabella Gleeson led to K/K’s third goal. Lily Hand also had a goal chance shortly after with Caoimhe Quinn scoring a point after a long solo run down the middle. But the St. Rynagh’s threat never faded. 15 minutes into the second half, St. Rynagh’s struck a ball across the goal mouth with it just slipping by goalkeeper, Stephanie Mahon.

They scored another two points and had another goal chance which was cleared by Lucy Lowry. But St. Rynagh’s scored their fourth goal within a few minutes leaving the game a draw with ten minutes to go. The last ten minutes were a tense affair with incredibly tough battling between K/K and St. Rynagh’s. With four minutes to go, Saorah Doyle managed to slip through St. Rynagh’s defences and pop the ball over the bar. Aideen Quinn scored her final point two minutes later securing the win for K/K and leaving the game, 3-12 to 4-07. The Minor team will be playing their Minor Final in the coming weeks!
