The Kinnitty Under 16 team that overcame St Sinchills in their opening match of this year's Championship

Under 16 Championship

Our Under 16 girls had their first match in this year's Championship on Wednesday evening when they took on St Sinchills in Kinnitty.

After last week's excitement of the presentation of new gear, it was time for the girls to take to the pitch in their new jerseys and put in a performance to match the gear.  But it was St Sinchills that got the better start with Cayla Lawlor and Keelin Dunne putting their team two points in front.  With eight minutes on the clock, Amber Mortimer opened the Kinnitty account when she converted a free.  A minute later Kate Harris put our girls in front when she pulled on the ball and finished in to the St Sinchills net.  Momentum was with the Kinnitty girls now and they added a further four points to extend their lead.

A number of frees were awarded to St Sinchills which were lobbed into the Kinnitty back line and it finally paid dividends after 23 minutes when Amy Walsh finished to the Kinnitty net.  The teams then traded points before the half time whistle sounded to leave Kinnitty leading by 3 points.

Kinnitty started the second half with a bang when Amber Mortimer went on a run and hit a bullet of a shot to the roof of the St Sinchills net.  She quickly added to it when she hit over to extend her team's lead.  Points from Hannah Robinson and Katie Standish followed before some good passing between the Kinnitty girls resulted in another point from Mortimer in the 24th minute to leave her team with an unassailable lead with time running out.

The impressive Cayla Lawlor added a point and a goal that sandwiched an Amber Mortimer free to finish the scoring and leave Kinnitty starting the Championship with a well earned win on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-4.

Well done to the girls on an excellent win and keep up the good work.

Feile Final

Our Under 15 girls took on Lusmagh/Drumcullen in the Division 2 Final in Crinkle on Sunday.  Both teams had won their three group games to set up an intriguing Final.

Lusmagh/Drumcullen opened the scoring after five minutes when Stephanie Queegan hit over.  Amber Mortimer delighted the Kinnitty supporters minutes later when she hit the back of the Lusmagh/Drumcullen net but after that Lusmagh/Drumcullen controlled the scoring in the first half hitting 4 points without a reply from the Kinnitty girls.  The lead could have been greater if it wasn't for the fantastic work by Abi Browne in the Kinnitty goals when she saved three times in quick succession.  With half time approaching, Kate Harris pointed for Kinnitty to leave her side trailing by three points at the break.

When play resumed, Lexi Bennett hit the opening score for Lusmagh/Drumcullen.  Mid way through the half Kinnitty had a purple patch that saw Meadbh Dooley and Amber Mortimer hit points before Katie Standish found the back of the net to leave the Kinnitty girls leading by a point.  With the clock ticking down and Kinnitty seemingly in control, they had an opportunity to score but they were unable to take advantage of the opportunity.  With the clock well into injury time, Lusmagh/Drumcullen went on the attack and while the Kinnitty supporters were wondering why the final whistle wasn't blown, the Lusmagh/Drumcullen girls found the net against the run of play to take the lead and leave them taking the spoils on a scoreline of 2-3 to 2-5 when the final whistle blew.

It was heartbreaking for the Kinnitty girls but they should take great heart from the performance they put in.  Well done girls and keep up the great work.

Under 14 Championship

Our Under 14 girls began their 2023 Championship campaign on Monday evening when they played Belmont in Moystown.  Given the recent amount of rainfall, the pitch in Moystown was in excellent condition and the grass freshly cut to make for great conditions for camogie for this time of year.

The Kinnitty girls proved to be the stronger team in the first half and a Kate Harris point set them on their way to opening up a commanding lead.  It was shortly followed up by a free from Amber Mortimer and goal poacher, Emma Robinson was on hand to finish to the net a minute later.  This would make up for the one she scored just before but referee Sean O'Donoghue ruled it out for a square ball.

The visitors continued to build on their lead when Amber Mortimer converted a free.  Mortimer quickly followed up with a beautiful point from play minutes after when Meadbh Dooley picked her out with a pin point pass.  Dooley then got on the score sheet herself with a point and added to it with a goal with half time approaching.  Credit to Belmont however as they helped themselves to a pointed free and a goal which proved to be the last action of the first half to leave Kinnitty leading at half time.  The girls' coaches will have had mixed feelings when they spoke to the girls at half time.  They dominated the first half and would have felt that their half time lead could have been greater.

When play resumed Amber Mortimer hit over a free but then Belmont had a mini purple patch and hit two goals and a point in the space of seven minutes to leave them trailing by the minimum.  A goal from Kate Harris a minute later helped settle any Kinnitty nerves and the team went on to close out the game with a brace of points from Amber Mortimer and a point and a second goal for Meadbh Dooley.

Well done to the girls on an excellent win with the final score reading Belmont 3-2, Kinnitty 4-10
