Clonard's Jason Plunkett elected chairman

Meath County Board Chairman Jason Plunkett

Outgoing Central Council delegate Jason Plunkett was elected chairman of the Meath Co Board in succession to John Kavanagh who didn’t seek re-election following four years in the post, at last night’s county convention.

The Clonard club man defeated the only other candidate Damien Griffin (Na Fianna) 108 votes to 93.

“As chairman of Meath GAA I have a vision for the future of the county. I want to see Meath GAA become a leader in the country in terms of performance, participation and promotion,” Plunkett told delegates following his election. 

“I want to see teams competing at the highest level in both codes and bringing home more silverware. I want to see more people, especially young people both girls and boys from all background and abilities getting involved in our games as players, coaches, referees, administrators and supporters. I want to see Meath GAA reaching out to the wider community and showcase our culture, heritage and values.”

Outgoing secretary Ciaran Flynn was re-elected for a second year after defeating PRO Brian Kelly 109 votes to 89. 

Seneschalstown club man Kelly held on to his PRO post defeating Alan Tormey 157 votes to 44.

In the vote for assistant secretary Nick Fitzgerald (outgoing) defeated Niamh Regan 114 votes to 82.

In the only other vote Mairead Delaney (outgoing) 84 votes and Martin O’Halloran 93, were elected to Leinster Council defeating the only other candidate Arthur Reilly with 13 votes.

Outgoing vice chairman Paddy Kelly, treasurer Gene Smith, assistant treasurer Jim Mullery and Oifigeach na Gaeilge Joseph O’Brien were all returned unopposed.

Conor Tormey was elected to Central Council and Eamonn Barry to the post of Coaching Officer without a contest.
