U15 FL Div 1 final: Bridge too far for O'Mahony's

July 21, 2023

St. Colmcilles had seven points to spare over O'Mahonys at Fr Tully Park

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-08 St Colmcilles 3-09

St Colmcilles strong first half left them with enough momentum to claim the U15 FL Div 1 title in Fr Tully Park on Wednesday evening. With clouds looking ominous, they passed shortly before the game and conditions were good for football.

It was a dream start for the Cilles with a goal within forty-five seconds of the throw-in, from a placed ball. Navan O’Mahony’s settled quickly and opened up the scoring with a point from a free from Cormac Fitzsimons in the third minute, followed by a similar effort from Bobby Gaffney. St Colmcilles added a free at the other end of the field after eight minutes.

A Gaffney point in the fifteenth minute left a single point between the sides. Almost immediately afterwards, Navan O’Mahony’s had their first chance to take the lead when Daniel Joseph was through on goal. The St Colmcilles netminder did his job however and the ball ended up over the bar, leaving the sides level. A minute later, a great score from Fitzsimons put the Brews Hill outfit ahead.

The lead wasn’t to last however, with St Colmcilles breaking through the Navan O’Mahony’s defence at the other end of the field and found the net once again. A 22nd minute point from play from Tom McGuinness proved to be Navan O’Mahony’s last score of the half, while St Colmcilles added four points (three frees and one from play) in normal time. Into injury they raised their third green flag of the day to give a substantial lead at the break.

Navan O’Mahony’s faced into the second half with an uphill battle but determined nonetheless. Before sixty seconds had passed, Joseph had found the net, leaving it a five point game and all to play for. Shortly afterwards, another goal opportunity was denied when Adam McEvoy sent a free into the square and despite the efforts of Joesph and Fitzsimons, it deflected over the end line.

Following a quiet spell on the scoring front, St Colmcilles left six in it again with a point in the thirteenth minute. McGuinness responded in turn for Navan O’Mahony’s.

The sides swapped scores again with Navan O’Mahony’s point coming from a Gaffney free. Try as they might, the Brews Hill side couldn’t reduce the deficit in spite of having plenty of possession. St Colmcilles added two points in the final ten minutes from play, leaving too much of a bridge for Navan O’Mahony’s.
