Navan O’Mahony’s 0-16Drumree 3-11
With Rounds 1 and 2 falling to the elements, it was a disappointing start to the Hurling League for our Div 2 side, losing out to Drumree by four points. They say goals win matches and that proved to be the case with the winners registering two scores less but still ending up on top.
The Brews Hill outfit got off to a great start, registering two points from play within forty seconds of the throw-in, from Paddy Dillon and Cormac Keyes. This spurt didn’t last long and after eight minutes, Drumree had edged in front, a goal following two points from play.
Paddy Dillon pulled back a point from play before Drumree split the posts three times within ninety seconds. Navan O’Mahony’s followed this up with four points, leaving a deficit of two points between the sides. The scores came from Keyes, Shane McCarthy and Evan Brady with a Dermot McKenna effort being deflected out for a 65.
In response to the last of these four scores, Drumree rattled the Navan O’Mahony’s net and followed this up with two points before the thirty minute mark. Two injury-time placed balls from Keyes reduced the deficit but Drumree held the advantage at the interval.
Navan O’Mahony’s 2-07 Drumree 0-09
Drumree extended the lead to five points shortly after the resumption, which was responded to by a pointed free by Keyes. A goal and a point for the visitors followed and left Navan O’Mahony’s very much chasing the game for the final twenty minutes.
Points from Keyes and Darragh Connell reduced the difference between the sides but Drumree managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The sides exchanged points in the seventeenth minute with Keyes scoring for his side.
A Drumree free in the twenty second minute was their final score of the game. In the closing ten minutes, Navan O’Mahony’s managed to raise three white flags, with Conor O’Dwyer taking an impressive score and two points in quick succession from Dermot McKenna.
Ultimately though, Drumree had too much on the day for Pat Nolan’s side and take the points on offer. Rio Russell and Sean McDermott both impressed on their league debut and look forward to a long career in the blue and white. Clann na nGael await in the refixed Round 1 on Tuesday evening
