The heart and soul of Navan O'Mahonys

April 08, 2020

The late Jim Cahill

We are so sorry to report the death of Navan O'Mahonys stalwart Jim Cahill.

A real gentleman, Jim had a near life long association with the Brews Hill club.

Good enough to play minor for Meath in 1949 and 50, Jim served the O'Mahonys in every sector possible. Amazingly he was chairman of the club on no less than three different occasions.

To ''serve them all my days'' was Jim Cahill's motto as he encountered and served with purpose every role posssible within the club. Be that club president, trainer, manager, kit man, selector, supporter, an endless list. Jim answered the call whenever required.

So courteous, he ran a successful cleaning and dress hire business in Navan's Cannon Row for decades. Customers and indeed all who met Jim Cahill were greeted with that warm smile and accompanying friendly remark.

The Cahill family in Navan are synonymous with the GAA. Jim's brother Brendan captained Meath to our first All Ireland minor title in 1957. His Nephew Neville Dunne was centrefield on the All Ireland minor winning selection of 1992 and two years later wore the Meath number ten jersey at senior level as Armagh were well beaten in the NFL final.

Jim's departure leaves a huge void in the O'Mahonys club. They were his second ''family'' as his death notice vigorously and rightfully points out.

He will be sadly missed around Brews Hill and in Meath, he acted as a Royal County junior selector, GAA circles. But his memory, the legacy will forever last.

Rest in Peace. Gentleman Jim.

Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
